Hemming the New Jeans!

I have put off hemming these new jeans for months. The back story is - my daughter took me to Scottsdale Jeans Company for my birthday and bought these neat jeans. They fit so well but were way long. So....I could either pay the store to hem them or do it myself. Of course, I refused to pay to have this done, no way! It took me 3 months to get the nerve to cut into the jeans - eeeeekkk!

Somewhere I read that the best technique for hemming jeans is to to maintain the original hem because the alternative is a bit cheesy looking

First I cut the hem off, leaving well over inch or so above the original hem. (Remember I wanted to save those original, gold stitch hem lines!) And I needed plenty of extra fabric for the new seam.
After measuring many times, I marked the exact line where the hem needed to fall. Allowing for the seam, I cut away the amount I needed to remove to match this line. I wanted the new seam to fall so very close to the nice, gold stitching on the original hem.
I carefully pinned and rechecked the measurements so that the stitch line would be right on the line I marked and close to the original hem line.

Using the zipper foot, I moved the needle close and stitched next to the original hem line on the inside. I used the jean-a-a-jig to get over those bulky seams.

It seemed to look fine. I checked the right side to be sure I stitched close enough.
Wow, it looked good. I was amazed how my new seam disappeared into the fabric; it was so close to the original gold stitching. Now on to the serger.
I serged the edge of seam I just stitched. Slowly, because jeans seams are so thick! A final check, a good press to force the new seam up and voila'. IMHO it looks like the original from the factory! Whew. I hope this is clear enough to help someone. It's my first effort at a tutorial.

You did such a good job. I think I would just have done my own gold thread and be done with it. Great of you to put so much into it. Far better person then I.

Thanks guys. I was not hard and really worth the final result. You do it next time the need arises. sj
